Within the UK media very little is said about the fact that the massive extension of the southern no fly zone up to Baghdad had nothing to do with protecting the Shias at all but was instead an opportunistic 'punishment' for SH actions in the northern zone. This US/UK act led to France pulling out of this policing. The ONLY legal justification given for these zones is humanitarian protection - 'containment' is not used in this way. Whereas some argument exists for the northern zone, there is none for the southern zone. Indeed the US/UK are responsible (through Gulf War damage to civilian infrastructure and sanctions) for many, many more deaths than SH amongst Shias as well as appalling deprivation and denial of life chances.
