First UK member of Iraq peace team departing Sunday

Stops off at Downing Street and USAF Fairford first....

Matt Barr, Voices in the Wilderness UK member, heads for Iraq Sunday 15 December 11.45 am, the
first British person to join the Iraq Peace Team (www.iraqpeaceteam.org).

Matt, an art student (22) from Chichester, will call at Downing Street on Friday 13th December
12:00 to hand in a message to Tony Blair.

On December 14th, the day before he leaves, Matt will join activists at USAF Fairford (base for
USAF B1, B2 and B52 bombers) in Gloucester for a mass citizen's weapons inspection.
(www.gwi.org.uk) While there Matt will see some of the bombers which may be bombing Iraq while he
is out there.

Matt will spend 2 weeks in Iraq, expected to return 31st December.
Matt visited Iraq in December 2001 on a sanctions breaking delegation, a visit that carried a risk
of 5 years in prison in the UK. He is an art student, aged 22.

Matt said, "While in Iraq we will visit the people in the firing line, and witness the devastating
effects of the last war and the effect of comprehensive economic sanctions, a weapon of mass
destruction that UNICEF says has contributed to the deaths of 500,000 children." (3)

Members of the Iraq peace team have been in Iraq since September this year, many plan to remain in
Iraq in the event of the anticipated US military onslaught.
